The Heart of Christmas (2011)

Christmas season is on and so are Christmas movies in families all around the nation and the world. If you are in the mood for a Christmas flick that is all about compassion, this reviewer recommends The Heart of Christmas (2011).

The movie starts with a wife and mom Megan Walsh (played by Candace Cameron Bure) who doesn’t have a lot of time for her family as she works online from home. On Halloween day, she sees a neighbor decorating her house for Christmas. Out of curiosity, Megan asks the neighbor the reason for Christmas decoration on Halloween. She is directed to a blog written by another neighbor Julie (Jeanne Neilson) who has been posting the story of her 2-year-old son Dax’s cancer diagnosis. As viewers see the story in flashback with Megan’s blog reading, the message of the movie filters in through the interaction of characters, both kids and grown-ups.

The Heart of Christmas is an inspirational movie that shows the value and beauty of compassion, playing together in Christmas spirit with the message of hope and healing. The question of what really matters most in life takes center stage in the movie’s plot. Lessons of care, love, and faith are presented in a soulful way.

The movie is based on a true story and, at its end, shows pictures of the real-life family that was struck with the tragedy. It leans more on the somber side; yet has its doses of smile with the scenes of little children lovingly doing their innocent little playful acts at the hospital where they battle for their lives.

The actors did a really good job on this, particularly Jeanne Neilson and Eric Jay Beck, who give lots of expressions to convey emotions of parents scared about losing their only child to death. Candace Cameron Bure and others do justice to their characters. Christopher Shone as little Dax is totally believable.

The Heart of Christmas is a movie for the soul, and one that resonates with the Christmas spirit. Director Gary Wheeler deserves praise for giving people a good Christmas movie whose message is eternal.
