Immune Supplements on Amazon Carry Misleading Labels

Posted on by in News

Are you getting what you are paying for on Amazon or other online stores? A recent analysis of immune supplements purchased online on Amazon found that majority of them had labels that don’t match their actual content.

Immune Supplements

FoodNavigator-USA reported (August 11, 2022) that a collaborative study by researchers from the University of Mississippi, Uniformed Services University, and the Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine analyzed 30 popular immune supplements sold on Amazon to see whether their content matched the labels.

The result of study published in JAMA Open Network show that only 13 of the 30 products analyzed had accurate labels based on the product analysis. The rest had several ingredients listed on labels but missing from the content. Nine supplements had substances that were detected in the content but not listed on the product labels.

The study’s Conclusion issued a wake-up call to consumers:

Consumers should be aware that these products may potentially not contain what is stated on the label.

Since the COVID-19 health emergency started in early 2020, the demand for immune supplements has gone up as people have been naturally inclined to get products that boost their immune system against possible infections. According to MarketWatch (August 09, 2022), the market size for immune health supplements in the United States was $18.22 billion in 2020 and is projected to reach $31.50 billion by 2028.d

While many supplements use natural ingredients, or claim so, many natural foods are rich in immune-strengthening nutrients like Vitamin C. In addition, there are quite a few well-known and widely spices rich in Vitamin C.
