Upper Peninsula Ready for Return of the Train Whistle
The scenic and historic Upper Peninsula of Michigan was once accessible by train. But since the 1970s, visitors and residents have mostly been dependent on driving to and from the region. Now a proposed train route has rekindled the hopes for convenient and safer travel by rail to the Upper Peninsula.
As reported in The Travel, the proposed Amtrak Northern Wind train line is one of the most-awaited possible future rail routes in the Midwest. The route would run from Chicago through Wisconsin and end its journey in Marquette, Michigan, which is the largest city in the Upper Peninsula.
The Northern Wind route to the Upper Peninsula would offer several benefits, particularly to passengers or visitors who either cannot/don’t drive or who need safer travel in winter months. The only other option is flying into the region though the available flights are limited and could cost above the average fair for any major commercial airport.
The key benefits of the proposed train route to Marquette were summarized by The Travel as:
- Connects major Midwestern cities to Michigan’s under-served Upper Peninsula
- Eases travel during harsh winter months
- Supports local economies through increased tourism
- Offers an environmentally friendly alternative to driving
