5 Tips for Becoming a Successful DJ

by Richard Clayton

Making it big in the entertainment industry is an extremely challenging task and requires a lot of perseverance. When you’re trying to become a successful entertainer as something like a DJ, there are plenty of obstacles you need to face. However, even with all of these hurdles that you need to get passed, there are still plenty of success stories within the industry. There are a variety of techniques that you can employ and advice that you can follow in order to raise the chance that you experience success as a DJ. So, how can you increase the likelihood you experience success within the industry? Here are five tips for becoming a successful DJ.

DJ

Get the Right Equipment

The first thing that you need to do in order to become a successful DJ is to ensure that you have the right equipment for the job. Some venues require you to use your own equipment in order to perform, so you’ll need to get all of that sorted out. In addition, you’ll need to have your own equipment if you’re going to practice or experiment at all. If you truly want to be a successful DJ, then you’re going to have to splurge when it comes to equipment. Buying low-quality equipment likely won’t get you anywhere, so in order to compete with other DJs, you’re going to need high-quality equipment.

Practice Often

If you’re looking to be successful in anything, then you’re going to need to put in the time and effort when it comes to practice. Practicing can have a wide variety of benefits for you, greatly improving your chance of being a successful DJ. First, your skill and ability as a DJ will be honed and improved as practice will help you get better rapidly. Secondly, practicing can allow you to experiment with different songs and styles, branching out and allowing you to discover new things that you can incorporate in your performances. Finally, practicing will allow you to finally settle on songs and styles you are comfortable with, giving you the ability to pick a particular style to perform with. The bottom line is, if you want to be a successful DJ, then you’re going to need to practice frequently.

Network with other DJs

Another important aspect of becoming a successful DJ is successfully networking with other people in your industry. The entertainment industry is notoriously hard to break into, and networking with other professionals in the industry can be a great way to get gigs. In addition, communicating with other DJs can help provide you with extremely valuable feedback, advice that you can then use to become an even better DJ. Networking is a crucial part of being successful in any industry, but it is even more important in the entertainment industry where work can sometimes be few and far between. Whether you’re networking with Houston club DJs, freelance party DJs, or event organizers, networking with other people in your industry is crucial to your success.

Promote on Social Media

One thing that most successful DJs do is promote their work on social media. Many DJs use social media to promote their individual brand and show off their work, something that greatly helps their ability to be successful. Building your brand is extremely important as a DJ, as the more your brand is built up the more likely you are to get high-quality gigs. Your social media pages could also act as a portfolio of sorts, displaying your works and achievements, something that also makes finding high-quality gigs easier. If you want to be a successful DJ, then you definitely should use social media to build your brand.

Take Lots of Gigs

For many people, DJing is a side job and not a full-time thing initially. Due to this, many novice DJs take only a small amount of gigs. However, if you truly want to be successful as a DJ, then you need to take as many gigs as possible in order to prepare yourself. Taking gigs can teach you a lot of things like how to interact with audiences, how to deal with performance anxiety, and how to properly negotiate with venues. While practicing by yourself may be helpful in getting you to improve, it can never emulate the full DJ experience. Due to this, if you really want to be comfortable and successful as a DJ, then you should take as many gigs as possible.
