Vegan Diet Ideal for Weight Loss and Cholesterol Control

Want to shed extra pounds and keep your Cholesterol level in check by eating healthy? Then a vegan diet is likely your best bet, per new research published last month.

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) posted the news on February 5th that vegan diet has been found more effective for weight and cholesterol control than Mediterranean diet. Published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, the study is titled “A Mediterranean Diet and Low-Fat Vegan Diet to Improve Body Weight and Cardiometabolic Risk Factors: A Randomized, Cross-over Trial”. The conclusion of the study reads:

A low-fat vegan diet improved body weight, lipid concentrations, and insulin sensitivity, both from baseline and compared with a Mediterranean diet. Blood pressure decreased on both diets, more on the Mediterranean diet.

The lipid concentrations and insulin sensitivity measures are related to low fat content and low calorie intake as well as fiber-rich nature of vegan food. In the Mediterranean diet, fatty fish, dairy products, and oils seem to make it less than ideal for weight loss goal.
