The DIY Designer – Inexpensive Ways to Enhance Your Interior Design

by Claire Wilson

Has your daydreaming been dominated by interior design ideas lately? Well, it might be time to take a look at your space and see what can be enhanced. If the one thing keeping you from starting a project like this is money, there are ways to make huge changes for only a small financial investment. Find some inspiration in these inexpensive interior design enhancements.

Update Your Fixtures and Trimmings

While many of us may fanaticize about gutting the entire property and starting from scratch, it’s about as expensive as it is unrealistic. The fact is, you can significantly enhance your interior design by updating the trimmings and fixtures currently in place. This might be giving your Commercial Drapery a refresh, or even upgrading your window and door handle hardware. Changes to your drapery will be immediately noticeable to all, and allows you to change the balance and color scheme of your space in one hit.

Fresh Color

Don’t underestimate the power of a fresh lick of paint. If your décor is looking a tad drab, reinvigorate the space with a new color on the walls, it will bring the space to life and afford you a new color pallet to build from. Avoid the temptation to pick your favorite color, and instead choose a tone that will enhance the space instead of dominate it. Painting is relatively inexpensive if you do it yourself, but remember to factor in the costs of the occasional décor items you will need to acquire to complement your new color.

Reupholster Your Furniture

Most furniture has great bones, and the idea of entirely replacing pieces can seem rash and wasteful. This is where reupholstering can add value for a small cost, but make an enormous difference. Decide which items you will upcycle, and then set about choosing the right upholstery fabric and start your project under the guide of upholstery tutorials. Aside from the upholstery fabric, you will find that you have all the tools to necessary to complete the job in only a few hours.

Upgrade Your Lighting

Everything looks better under the cover of darkness, with the dim lighting casting a flattering light over its surroundings. Your home light can have the same effect. The simple, and incredible affordable, act of selecting the right bulbs and dimming features can instantly give your home décor an enhanced and boutique appearance. If you can’t alter your electrical too much, you can select some tasteful lamps and spotlights to soften the glow of your interior and choose which areas you want to highlight.

Be Your Own Artist

When it comes to filling a house with treasured arts, there is usually a bit of trepidation. What if no one else likes this piece? What if it sticks out like a sore thumb? The fact is, art is subjective and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Filling your home with art is an inexpensive way to add some culture and class to your space. Sourcing pieces that are second hand, or finding pieces at your local markets or online means you have a wider selection to choose from and you will be paying less than you would if you went to a dealer direct or a gallery.

We are all interested in finding out ways to enhance our interior decor offering without paying more than we need to. Start playing around with these simple strategies and see just how much of a difference they make. Try one of two ideas at a time to control cots, or apply all of them to one room at a time.
