How to Make Your Kids Love Going to School
Guest Blogger: Mike Hawks
Children in general hate going to school. There can be a number of reasons for this. Parents tend to take this lightly and force their children into going without trying to identify the problems. This can have a negative effect on the child. It is extremely important for parents to try and understand why their child does not want to go to school.
If you understand why your child does not like their school, it would be easier for you to handle the situation. You can even take the appropriate measures to try and change their opinion. This will require a bit of time and effort but will help you in the long run. There are a number of ways in which you can make your child like going to school. These include:
Friends
If your child has a group of friends in school, they will definitely enjoy themselves. You can try and help them make friends. This you can easily do by hosting a small party for all the classmates. This will always help your child in interacting and boosts confidence. In case your child is facing bully problems, you could advise them on how to tackle such kids.
Rewards
Rewards are in most cases, the best motivating factor for children. They act as positive reinforcers. You can convince your child to go to school by offering to buy them something they like. This also works in altering their behavior at school. Most parents tend to go for the negative reinforcers and punishments in such situations, which are not considered to be a good option.
Likes and Dislikes
You would obviously know what the likes and dislikes of your child are. Once you identify these factors, you can easily change their opinion regarding school. For example, if your child likes a particular sport, you should help them in improving their skills so that they get better. But at the same time, you have to work on their dislikes as well.
If your child dislikes a certain subject, it is usually because they are having problems. You should help them in trying to overcome their problems and get better at it. This will change their perceptions and onions drastically. The key is to work on both factors and not just one. A balanced approach will allow your child to adapt easily.
Perception
Research has shown that most kids who dislike school think of it as some sort of punishment that they have to go through. There are many reasons which have been identified that may cause this perception to be formed. Teachers are sometimes one major reason why children might hate going to school. But in most cases, the reasons are very simple.
Your child might dislike school because of the pressure and stress. In such situations, you should try to reduce these effects as much as possible. This can simply be done by counseling or helping them in their school work.
