Daily Harvest Recalls French Lentil and Leek Crumbles after Hundreds Fall Ill

Popular vegan food company Daily Harvest has recalled all its French Lentil + Leek Crumbles as hundreds of people across the country have reportedly fell sick after consuming it.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) posted the announcement of Daily Harvest on June 23 to notify the public of the recall of all its French Lentil + Leek Crumble. The reason for recall is reports of gastrointestinal illness and potential liver function issues among consumers who used the vegetable protein product.

As described in the announcement, the affected food product French Lentil + Leek Crumbles is a frozen product packaged in a 12oz white pouch with the words “Daily Harvest” at the top, a large “CRUMBLES” immediately below the top. All lots of it have been recalled by the company.

Food Safety News reported on July 15 that 277 people who consumed the product have reported falling ill to the FDA while the company has received over 470 such reports. Of the 277 who reported falling sick to the FDA, 96 were hospitalized. Symptoms of the sickness include: yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice), dark urine, itching with no rash, gastrointestinal illness, nausea, fatigue, body aches, severe abdominal pain and/or fever. Some of the consumers affected by the product have filed lawsuits against the company.

The exact cause of the sickness following the consumption of French Lentil + Leek Crumbles is not known yet. Daily Harvest says it is testing the affected product for various pathogens but has not detected anything so far. Featuring an NBC story on the recall, Yahoo News wrote:

Daily Harvest said that so far, testing has ruled out common food-borne pathogens, major allergens, pesticide, Hepatitis A, norovirus, and a range of mycotoxins, including aflatoxins.
