Finding the Right Lawyer for the Situation

by Sara Stringer

Tens of thousands of people every year need to hire an attorney to help them with personal and professional situations. LawyerAnd just like it is imperative to find the right doctor for a specific medical issue, it is also important to find the right lawyer for your particular need. So knowing a little about some of the most commonly needed lawyers may help you find the right lawyer for your situation.

Family Law

Family law can encompass anything from divorce to adoption, and most domestic situations that involve children or the family unit. Typically, people don’t need a family lawyer unless something very unexpected has happened. As a result, most people don’t really know what to look for in a good family lawyer and they risk hiring someone who may not be the right fit.

Here are some questions you may consider asking a lawyer before you choose to hire him or her:

  • What type of cases do you usually take on?
  • What expertise do you bring to my case?
  • May I get copies of all correspondence you send or receive about my case?
  • What do you expect from me as a client?
  • What can I expect form you as my lawyer?

You may want to ask your potential lawyer what their track record has been with previous clients, but make sure you also ask them how long they have been practicing in that particular area of law. For example, they could have been a lawyer for 20 years, but they may have only been practicing family law for 3 of those years.

International Law

International laws and rules are constantly changing. You may want to make sure you have a lawyer that can keep up those changes. International lawyers also cover a broad scope of issues. NYU Law states that an international lawyer covers cases involving:

  • International commercial law
  • Transitional justice
  • Global climate change
  • Economic development
  • World Trade Organization
  • Global anti-trust litigation
  • Security Council powers and anti-terrorism

It’s fair to say that most people needing an international lawyer would be people who might need them for professional reasons. But individuals who are looking to live, work, or go to school abroad would be smart to connect with an international lawyer. For instance, if you live or go to school in the UK and there are changes in employment laws, you might be greatly affected. An international lawyer would be able to keep you up to date on these changes.

Personal Injury Law

Personal injury lawyers have mostly become known because of car accidents or medical injuries. But personal injury lawyers are needed for anything relating to accidents, or incidents regarding individuals. A common, but lesser known reason for this type of lawyer would be because of elder abuse or neglect and the need for a nursing home abuse lawyer.

  • On average, about 1 in 10 elderly adults experience abuse.
  • Adult Protective Services show an increase in this trend.

These statistics from The National Center for Elder Abuse are shocking and revealing. And because many of the victims of elder abuse can’t coherently speak up for themselves, finding a solid and experienced lawyer is extremely important.

Business Law

Business Law is booming in the US because anyone who has a business should have a specialized lawyer. The magazine Entrepreneur points out some of the things you will need a business lawyer for.

  • Contracts
  • Real estate
  • Taxes and licenses
  • Intellectual property

Business lawyers can help with employee or client disputes, and they can help you with any legal issues when you want to expand your business. You also may want to ask if they have worked with clients in your particular industry, and how well connected they are within the business law community.

There are various specialties in the practice of law, and having the right lawyer for the right circumstance can make or break your case. Make sure to do your due diligence.
