Blood Pressure Medication Quinapril Recalled Over Cancer Risk
Certain lots of the blood pressure medication Quinapril have been recalled over risk of potential cancer-causing impurities and if you have this medication, please read ahead before taking your next pill.
Reported in Idaho Statesman on Monday, the recall announcement comes from the FDA and includes four lots of Quinapril Tablets. The reason for the recall is too much of the nitrosamine impurity N-Nitroso-Quinapril, which raises the risk of cancer when taken in large amounts.
The following lots of the medication have been recalled by their manufacturer Lupin Pharmaceuticals.
- Quinapril Tablets USP, 20mg | lot No. G102929 | expiration date of April 2023
- Quinapril Tablets USP, 40mg | lot Nos. G100533, G100534, G203071 | expiration dates of December 2022 and March 2024
These lots were distributed across the United States to wholesalers, drugstore chains, mail-order pharmacies, and supermarkets.
The story notes that in October Aurobindo Pharma recalled two lots of Quinapril because of the same nitrosamine impurity. Earlier this year, Pfizer recalled some lots of it blood pressure pill Accuretic and Quinapril for the same reason – elevated levels of nitrosamine. Nitrosamine impurities are said to exist in some drugs because of the way they are manufactured, stored, and/or packaged. The acceptable intake limit set by the FDA of 26.5 nanograms of nitrosamine per day (ng/day).
The FDA advises anyone with questions on the recall to call Inmar Rx Solutions at 877-538-8445 Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm (Eastern Standard Time). To report online, follow the link www.fda.gov/medwatch/report.htm
